rent apartment gran canaria

[music] i'm sergeant first class lauren currentwith the united states army field band and you just heard the united statesarmy field band brass quintet we're hanging out today with thecalifornia music educators association at their annual conference and our hosttoday is craig brian who is a band representative for the bay area so today's clinic is going to be aboutbuilding your band from the brass up but before we get into that i justintroduced what the army field band does we r the musical ambassadors for theunited states army

we tour over a hundred days a year allover the nation and we are outreach to offer army and so todaythis is part of our educational outreach mission so we're going to be talking about allkinds a brass topics for you and the first piece you just heard wasan original for the brass quintet written by wilkey renwick he was a hornplayer and is also well-known for his brass quintet works and dancepiece which is performed would probably be his most well-knownwork and we decided to program that today because

mister in what recently passed away in2014 so this is sort of our tribute to him so we're going to be playing a lot abrass quintet music and some original some not %uh the next piece would like to featureis another piece originally composed for the brass quintet medium and this piece is by a young composernames kevin mckee and he you may not know his name yet butwe think you soon will he was at recent graduate student at theuniversity of maryland

and this piece was his graduate projectsthis is a wonderful brand new pieces music that really features a lot of thegreat sounds you might hear in the brass quintet so this is escape by kevin mckee well in the went in hair hair ryan

wide row remember where in where the mood her the the new the the new i'm of are or you or or in hand in hand of

the the new of the new i'm of where of in theme for first hidden

the from for in hell on want group in for huge we're wah from group robert griffin the more

for rent for i'm in for now the thank you very much and so that was escape by kevin mckeeand so the united states army field band asi said we are the musical ambassadors army and were also based out ofwashington dc but this group here is the us army fieldband brass quintet

so we're all members at the largerensemble which is the concert band and we also have as a part of our unit a full chorus a male female chorus we havea jazz band the jazz ambassadors and we have a rockpop show group called the volunteers saw love these groups comprised the usarmy field band but as a partner educational me mission we love breaking into smallerchamber ensembles and that's really what this clinic today building your band from the brass up isall about italian

educators you can use mediums like thebrass quintet to improve the overall sound of your band so i know all this can speak frompersonal experience that we've learned so much as musicians performingin these chamber ensembles and it's really some of the best ways todevelop those skills for young musicians that they can applythen to everything that they do so some other topics we're going to talkabout today will cover things and some tips and ideas on how to get a brassquintet started at your school sometimes it's hard hard to get thestudents to come together for something

separate like this but i think once they're sold on the idea the skills andthe leadership and just the musicianship that you candrive from this kind of a small group can pay huge dividends and your overallbe in program and so the next piece that we'd like toplay for you today is a great example love something at a high schools brassquintet might find that they can really sink their teeth into is a very well-known brass quintet andpieces by john cheatham and its perfect for a high school levelgroup it's very accessible but also

challenging for all the members of thegroup and so this is the scherzo by john cheatham rough on where in see on hunger where from after in in

their not were i'm i'm for 1 i'm there alright i'm remember room whom for are for for where one been now

well i'm want from i'm where front i'll here in in there boo thank you very much by a master's arbabjerry i play when the group as you can see andwhat we love about chamber music

the field and is a fantastic team whatbetter way to build the team then to break down into into smallergroups we get to hone our skills that way nowi've got a lot of lot survive opportunities in in thebrass quintet we get to you know of course working as a team we kill a bit more the spotlight here soi'd like to share more about the personal story about why i think you guys should push chambermusic to your students my sin i'm and b notes to me decided that hewanted to play or

so he's a horn player he's eleven yearsold in the fifth grade i'm just the other day he came to me and said dad i wanna switch trumpet okay so either i'm not doing my job right or theteachers not he's getting bored with his instrument so i'd like tochallenge you guys in order to keep your students playingbrass to keep your pants getting better get a min quintets kidman chamber musicso that it challenges them if you challenge him he's going tohopefully accept the challenge in blossom on thehorns so i'd like i'd like to stand horn

and i don't think we need more troopsplayers in the world maybe an ok anyway we like to continue on with whatwe're doing would like to play another piece thatwould be very accessible to high school student i'm its actuallygot lots of notes i think a even know my son is in fifthgrade if i threw the spartans from them he'd probably freak out so this is gabrielle east cans or aperson re: number two you

the non there want home when her the new the from well well remote for ralph of

hear him front here out and i am by great so my part arm talkin is about the beginning and you was music educators i have agreat role

and in getting it started and then youplant the seed and then they can go forth and do whatthey do best is is to perform on i liked you come upwith acronym so edge arm explain demonstrate guide and enable arm sothat's all about the organization and the implementation youas the band director you have to select sites i get them you know the practicerooms and the ability to for hearst togetherkinda help them help them along and i get them organized

arm if they're organized they're gonnahave a little more success %uh the instrumentation as you see thisis the preferred brass quintet with the two we allunderstand that right the tuba is the far superior base voice up the brass quintet you canuse a bass trombone if you'd like that works ok but the preferred is isthe tuba that an upset om tools as as professionals we use a metronome we use

a recorder and a tuner and that kind ofeliminates all arguments are will sit here and bob will say that to bar is slowingdown an argon multitudes down will put themetronome on and yes i was slowing down that the i was russian are that and all arguments and it's great tohave these available arm in the rehearsal arm and i'm sure you use them in in yourrehearsals but if we get them to use them in the rehearsaland they know how to use it

their part about solution instead a part of the problem upplanning in timing all these groups they should have apurpose arm for instance i think a great idea is tohave your brass quintet maybe play the national anthem pta or perform for the pta you know they should have certainperformance goals and that's another way that us the educator can help them set goals

and and have a purpose if we're just forher sing without a purpose on or not doing what we need to do arm the first rehearsal if you could bethere at the first rehearsal that would be outstanding just to help guide themalong arm even have appointed student leaderon for this brass quintet i'm the studentthe i on the leader and it just makes it easier if it'sgoing through one person arm self those are my ideas above courseyou guys are the experts and you know

much better and we do about students butthese are just our ideas are the next piece we're gonna playwe're going to add arm a drummer and we wish we feel like this really experienced the sound at thebrass quintet and maybe makes it a little moreaccessible to the world are we really like it and art so thenext piece we're gonna play is renaissance dances it'll be twomovements %uh win in

are for her for her where an hour happen time well her the mail warm for

for am you thank you very much ladies andgentlemen i masses are near inc address i played trombone in the quintet as asyou can see for the next thing i'd like to talkabout with the with the student brass quintet hopefully you for identified some students that may beinterested in this i am and i think you can it's a rig very good way to kill acouple birds with one stone so at solo and ensemble time

quite often a this the the students are curry rushed at least that was myexperience i'm soul sometimes the product is not maybewhat the students would have liked in their chance forsuccess success may not make it not work good up have a an existing state student groupthey may have already built a repertoire and when it comes around solong summer time they can pick any peace they've already played together manytimes and they can probably increase theirodds for success

greatly i'm so with the new studentgroup i'm d another thing to consider is thatmany high school students probably have neverplayed in a brass quintet before ever i and and and they're used to having aconductor in front of them so for the first rehearsal you shoulddefinitely be present or have maybe a studentteacher start of the first rehearsal with them and coach them onsep techniques to play on their own as an ensemble ifyou notice we'll never conduct a review of course

and we use a lot of visual a in pornbobbing i contact might my trombone has a longslide it's very visual it's very easy to start soon that way it's very easy foreveryone else to see me chica tune of a so those are those are some helpfulthings for the first rehearsal i there was one the new us got stolen inmind playing at local events local that eventcoordinators love to have somebody for free particularly if they come from a localhigh school %uh so that's something else to consider

i am so we are present at and we'vewe've already added in another instrumentalist well now would like to add a soloist um healing from willis texas to play ournext piece entitled chart us please welcome sir to firstclass learn current d prasad be way when

what the why were what we're all when when moral woohoo of of the moral when her all-girl when the who i'm when well one

what when i'm when where were one when on who were on the move i'm i'll proper we read there the theme the 0

the move the new the all who when when world wall when earl the new where when min whenever where theme that will work more for where %ah be my hi everyone i'm sergeant firstclass warrior

and something i wanna talk about is nowthat you have also you have a small brass quintetthat's established in there wanting to meet regularly i think it's reallyimportant party touched on this a little bit in that you really need to be there forthose first couple rehearsals if for nothing else than to provide energy and drive and a level up highexpectation to the students because i think what you want to do she wanna helpthem go from the band director thinks that discreteneeds to be good too we want

this group to be very good and so ithink if you start with that energy that's gonna help getting to the groupas well obviously we want to have goals for the group we've been talking aboutthat a little bit an size rehearsal goals for each wontheir rehearsals i think having performance goals something like solo ensemble festivalwhich is great i believe my son cameron be and cameras are discussed a little bit withyou and i think it's whether grace opportunities for the students toperform

and please think about planning aheadgive give them set them up for success by more than just a couple weeks youknow the more time they have prepared a better chance to play better now also have a good time doing it and to helpthem besides the constructive criticism that you see arethat you get from the judges ass on ensemble festival you can have your students perform for you as well as your other the otherstudents in the room your long time he be amazed i know we've been we've

we listen we have peer to peer you hearwhat your peers have to say and on top of that the nerves that it takesto plan for your peers sometimes greatly outweighs that applying forstrangers so it's a great tool to use i i reallybelieve another goal is you actually have to have a sound inmind that you want to emulate and we all know that and it's soimportant but hearing great music are whether it's liverecordings as well as just can great musicians itis in paris absolutely important

and you can take them to live concert itdoesn't have to just be a a brass chamber ensemble but them here vocalists let them hearstring quartets taken to larger groups and ensembles anythings you can learn something from everything as far as recordings go on the handoutswe gave you some information about some possibly some pieces and grouphenry albums that you might wanna check out with your students if you needother names you can obviously reach us back your arms job and our comm we willhelp you

are two if i now call the skin name prytenor or more off the top of my head of musicians andmusic that you could listen to and provide for your students most important things i think is that you everyone wants to be a part issomething that's that's really great every wants to say what that looks likefun i want to be a part of that and thiskinda goes back to when i first heard about the energy if you can provide energy for that onebrass quintet

and you get them excited to want toperform then they start to excite the other members are your brass thatperhaps our dinner on somebody and they say i want to be a part of that and if youcan imagine just how great your brass section would be to sit downwhen you perform music by granger are obvious longerwhoever you're working at that time if the entire brass section if you gottwo brass quintets strahan now horn quartet to be phony incourt at trombone ensemble how incredible the brass section withsound so please get as many of your

students you can involve has really makes a difference for next piecewanna perform we've now got adding some first-classcurrent to our group make a sextet and this is a a nice arrangement there one of ourin-house arrangers srg norris did for us i love are rossini's barber of sevilleso very popular work i'm sure you'll know when we hope you do enjoy it thank you on of

the mir me one in for wouldn't one min war room of well well on wouldn't the matter fin where for

fun the new front for the mall for while or or who whirl rumor well the hill where were world the the no

well from on in her career for in from grainger them work co well the mornin in children and now i'm in i'm

ste on been thank you very much it's so nice of themto let me play with them in their brass quintet have a great timeadding a lil euphonium boys to the mix and that's something that you can do asteering group as well as mixed up the instrumentation i know you funny implayers we are always willing to jump into anygroup that a let's hang so am if you have a stellar you buddy i'mplayer and maybe not the best trombone player you can always sub in anout and and any number of

things as you know that's another greatthing that you're not just limited to the instrumentation a press contact i'm so for the next portion we wouldlike to ask if you have any questions about us so we'd love to hear from some love youn a the questions can be anything regarding music or the army or on our experiences in brass quintets forwith student brass quintets so i am we'd love to in 30 questions youmight have first this time i'm

mmm any takers mmm you gin we're having some technicaldifficulties g but i am as far as further elaboratingon the brass quintet with with the different instrumentation am welike having a drummer for a lot over stuff so again with your percussionstudents if you have some some hot chopper crash instance there'sa lot of things that most of our stuff and staff sergeant emerick really hetakes apart from other people in the bay and then he may improvise over it orhill right out some hits and things that

kinda shit with whatever it is we'replaying so that's something that can encourage creativity from students so i thinkwe're right for us right now you it's if you have some questions downanother now %um a plate is planned what level every played what yeah later well her yeah we play one more tune and then we'll doquestions i think we can probably do so i can get ready to go to play next tomy of think i've you're really excellent

questions so this is a great steve /urltune that's been arranged and sorta add new orleans-style and this is hometown blues up have been the jordan for the the mountain the for in warm in rural run will you field hot

yet but range he the good i'll sir for a g thank you thank you very much an okay so did yathink it's a great questions while we were away in no

i okay brother are and their love i they'll hookers rather by okay so the question was do wehave any other repertoire and that might be recommended for ayounger student maybe middle school bama had certainfirst-class yegor take that one my think one thebest things you can do when you get into younger students is totalk bring %uh maybe books have corrals that you can use hymns and things likethat work

excellent and i you also working onsound quality and whose who's most important who's gotthe line leading line things like that i i found that your book occur bachchorales is an amazing think there's also arm are 10 master works for brass by i thingslast name was pelts plz i think is his name he knoweach one of those their their prettiest accessible are at leasthalf of them are and those are really great as well by reallyhighly recommend the crown books no four-part harmony seeyou can usually are you put our

tube on base and how do you and twobands from bone in in our kids on the bay so it's it's agreat way to work with students younger students my k hum any other questions if you could come upso we could hear you a little bit better they be great if we have any morequestions it we're right and time first so a i want to thank you guys for todayreally appreciate yep year so much
