[audience speaks]. you, where are you from? [audience speaks]. an hour southof cornwall? ottawa, ottawa? wow. where are you guys from? [audience speaks]. chatham?i was born in windsor, near chatham. anybody farther away? no? but still, thank you forcoming, and my name is laurie hill and i am the academic adviser in the degroote schoolof business, there are 4 of us, i am 1 of

4. and i want to congratulate you studentshere today for their acceptance into the first year program in - in the degroote school ofbusiness, you are actually in the commerce program so i know you worked very hard thispast year, in your grade 12 trying to achieve the grades that you need to get in to theprogram. i want to congratulate you, and i think we all should give you a round of applause.and also to the parents, i know you will suffer, i'm a parent as well. and helping your daughteror son to get the grades to get in so i'm sure it's a big relief, maybe it's a big scarenow that they're going to university. i will pass the torch on to alex, she's going totalk about first year, but maybe first before we do that, i'm going to bring everybody up.i have a great crew of volunteers here today,

these are upper level commerce students, couldyou all come up - and let's have just a quick hello and introduce yourselves and tell mewhat program you're in and we can move on. - hi guys, well first of all welcome to mcmaster, you guys have done a great decision to come here. my name's natalia and i just finishedmy third year of commerce. i have been part of an exchange program last year, i traveledto france for a semester, did my courses there. i'm currently on internship at defasco, sothat's taking me about 16 months to do, and then i'll be coming back in september 2017for my final year. i've had a great time here at mcmaster, and i'm sure you will to.- hi everyone, i'm alex, you're going to see a lot of me when you come here because i ama degroote suit wearer, so i am wearing a

green suit right now and when you first arrive, whether you're going to be an off campus student or living in residence, you'll probably seea whole bunch of us wearing this, coming and greeting you in your car. we might be screaming,we might be cheering, don't be alarmed. and so, stay tuned for that. i am in my fifthyear, i also completed an exchange, i went to the netherlands for a semester, and theni did an internship through our internship program at pepsico. so i'm back now and i'mactually going on exchange again, i'm going to be going to singapore. lots of opportunitieshere at mac, that's kind of the main message here. i'll be talking more about exchangeand internship in the presentation so if you have any questions, save them for that.- hi, my name's shanzay and i'm going in to

my third year and i'm majoring in hr, you'llalso see me a lot during welcome week because i'll be one of the welcoming reps, we're allsuper, super excited to see you during welcome week. it will be the best week of your life, and other then that i'm majoring in hr and you'll see me a lot throughout the year. i'mon two different commitees, i'm going to be the third year representative for commerceso you'll see me organizing a lot of workshops and stuff, i would love for you guys to cometo. that'll just be helping you with some of your skills, and yeah.- hello everyone, thank you so much for coming today ailish mcgilly, i'm heading in to myfourth and final year here at degroote. i'm also the president of the degroote accountingassociation, so if anybody has any questions

about accounting, or is interested in gettinginvolved, feel free to reach out. - hi guys, my name is anika and i just finishedmy first year and heading in to second year of commerce, i am an orange suit, unlike therest of the green suits. so what an orange suit is, basically we're representing thestudents who live off campus, whether it be in hamilton or whether it's commuting froma different city, so if you have any questions about that i will be talking and feel freeto reach out to me afterwards. - my name is della, i'm also going in to mysecond year. you will see a lot of me during welcome week as well, i'm one of the firstyear orientation coordinators, which later on in the presentation you'll learn more about, but hopefully you're interested in and like

most of you i also don't know what i'm goingin to yet so you're not alone. - hi name is aneui, i'm going in to my finalfourth year of commerce, i'm majoring in finance, minoring in french. i am also an off campusrep for welcome week so you will see a lot of me and i'm also a ta for some selectedsecond year courses. i really hope you guys have an awesome time at mac because theseare the best four years of your life. - potentially five- potentially more - hey guys my name is steph, i'm going into my second year commerce, i'm hoping to stream in to marketing later on, i'm alsolike everyone, except for mika, a green suit rep and i'm also v.p. of marketing for thedegroote commerce society so if you ever have

any questions about getting involved or anyideas for future years, like - come say hi, i love talking to people. fun fact, if you'reon the degroote 20/20 page i'm also the one that spams their page, i apologize, but imean - most of the information is useful. - hi guys, my name is [?], i'll be enteringmy fifth year, i'm doing a major in accounting and i'm currently working at kpmg.- without my volunteers we would not be able to run this session, so i thank you all verymuch. as you can see a lot of them are, right across the board, a few students just finishedfirst year and look at them. they're out there helping and involved. and right through tofourth and fifth year, i've had a few of these students help me every year with the sessions, they're greatly involved and it's inspiring,

i hope it is from the students coming in tofirst year. so now i will pass it on to alex, she is going to give you the first part ofour presentation. - can you hear me if i don't use the mic?i've been told i'm loud, so. is that okay? are we good?- you're good in the back? you can hear her okay?- yeah? okay, just cause i'm not that coordinated , so i think using all three at once wouldreally end in a bad situation. so off the top, i know we have students and parents here, and both of you might be feeling a mix of these emotions, but um - how are you guysfeeling today? you must be pretty excited , right? i don't know if your exams are donewith high school, who still has exams? oh,

well thank you for coming out, and takingthe time away from your studying schedule to be here with us. has everyone had theirgraduations? yeah, no? that's a pretty exciting time, but i'd like to say that as much asthat is exciting and what not, enjoy it but this is probably even more exciting. becauseyou're about to enter - people say it's the best four - five years of your life, and it'snot really an exaggeration, it's pretty literal. but it's okay if you're nervous, and it'sokay if you're scared. it's a totally different environment, it's a big change. the changefrom grade 8 to grade 9 is always a big change for people, and it's the same sort of transitionwhen you're coming to university. that being said, there's a lot more people in the sameshoes as you and there's a lot of people like

us that are here to help you, so i wish ihad had someone in a green suit when i was in grade nine, entering in to high school.it would have made things a little easier. so off the top, fifty. that number is prettysignificant because our presentation today has been broken up in to fifty minute segments, and the reason being is your typical lecture for a first year class, given that it's nota night class, will be 50 minutes in length. so we're going to try to mirror that today.so after our 50 minutes, we're going to take a break. you'll see you have some surveysout on your desks, if you don't mind filling those out for us that would be great, we'llbe collecting them in the break. they're anonymous so feel free to be 100 percent honest, we'renot going to - it will not affect your first

year 1d03 mark with what you write on thatsurvey, but it's just general feedback to help us help other years of incoming firstyear students. so that's the reason why it's going to be broken up in to 50 minutes. so,like i said - we have our 50 minute segments. the first one is just going to be a generalintroduction to business and commerce. so basic questions and what not, then we're goingto get in to the technical stuff, woops. so, how do i register for courses? i'm sure you'veall heard of this mosaic platform, and that's how you'll enrol for your courses and whatnot. there's also avenue to learn and that's where a lot of documents used in your courses, and marks, and assignments are handed in. so that will all be explained to you in detail.and then we'll end if off with the student

experience, and there's two portions to that, there will be the presentation portion, where we'll talk about things like exchange andinternship, and clubs and committees that you can get involved in, and then we'll alsobe leading some tours if you guys are interested. there will be student lead tours of the placesthat we think are pretty commonly visited while you're on campus. if you have anywhereelse you want to go to, volunteers will be more then happy to show you. but that willbe up to you guys if you want to attend those at the end. so let's get started. so the studentexperience academic office is - will be located in the degroote school of business, it willbe in the main lobby. it's currently being renovated right now, so you might not seeit on your tour, but it is there - it will

be there in september. there's all the informationabout how you can contact them and what not. what's really important about that officeis that they're your connection or - they're there to help you if you have an issue todo with an exam, or a conflict, if you need to find any academic guidance or counsellingand things like that. they're the office with the people you want to talk to. one thingto note, the e-mail that's listed there. you can only contact them with your mcmaster e-mail,and that's just for privacy and security reasons. anyone can really be using your gmail or thingslike that so if you're ever going to contact them, make sure it's with your mcmaster e-mail.have you guys all got your macid's and your mac e-mails? yes, no. no, yes. okay, there'sno response, i'm going to go with a yes on

that one. yeah, so your mac e-mail is justalways going to be, it's a really simple formula. your macid, so for me that's the first coupleletters of my last name and my first name meshed together, and then at mcmaster.ca.so if you know your macid, but you don't know your mac e-mail, you actually do know yourmac e-mail, because it's just your macid @mcmaster.ca. does that make sense? are we all clear withthat? questions, no? okay. so if you have questions about things, whether you're - throughoutthe summer or when you're in first year, or whether you're in 3rd year, great e-mail toreach out to. so with that being said, you have faculty that are there to help you inthe experience office, but then you also have students that are here to help you and kindof get you acclimatized to the mac environment.

and that, those students are the degrootecommerce society, so you will meet a couple of representatives from that - i guess youwant to say, elevated student council? but they're going to help you throughout the year.they plan lots of different events and they monitor the facebook pages and what not, soboth the facebook and the twitter there are pretty, pretty key to follow and to stay up-to-datewith, it's the easiest and best way for us to promote our events and it's real easy tosign up to, feel free to follow those. now, before i get to campus in the fall. theseare kind of the three main things that you need to do, so first, is your account setup? i had asked if everyone knew what their macid and mac e-mail was, and it seemed tobe the consensus that we all did, so given

that information, you need to activate yourmacid on mosaic. we'll go through in more detail how to do that with some step by stepguides to figure out mosaic, but that is something that you need to do in order to look at coursesand eventually enrol in courses. so once you log in to mosaic and everything's good androlling, you'll be able to see a learning plan and it shows you which courses that youneed to complete - to be completing in first year - complete first year. and then you canenrol in those courses. i believe you all have been assigned a date to enrol and it'seither june 29th or june 30th. so ideally, it'd be great to set up your account and startlooking at courses a little bit of time before then, that way when you sign on on the 29thand 30th it's smooth sailing. doesn't take

too long to do and it's pretty user friendly, trust me we used to have this other program before that that was a lot more difficultto navigate, so you are blessed to have mosaic. so yeah, that's kind of something to do - onyour to-do list after this orientation. so your student card, have you guys got yourstudent cards yet? in the mail? no? so they will be coming, your student card is yourkey to life. i would say your key to success but it's your key to life. your student cardwill be used if you're living on residence for first year, for your meal plan. your studentcard would be used if you're going to the gym or the athletic center. but most importantlyyou need your student card to write mid terms and finals. if you don't have your studentcard, you have a window of time that you can

try and get a temporary card and what not,but it's like half an hour, or something like that, and if you exceed the half an hour timeslot, which is within your exam time - you fail the exam. so don't lose your studentcard. that being said if you do lose it, you can pay throughout the year to get a replacementcard done, but if you're someone like me who loses things often, that's quite a littleexpensive, it adds up at the end of the year. so needless to say, hold on to that thing,it is your life. you will also, once you come to campus in september, there's a bus passthat you can get with your student card and there will be information on where you goto pick that up, but it allows you to use the hsr and the hamilton buses, so if you'renot living on campus, but you're living somewhere

in the hamilton area, that is also an opportunityfor you to use that for transportation. so, this was something that i was obviously confusedin - with, when i started to enrol in courses. because all of you will be entering and enrolingin what's called business 1. but, yes, if all things go well throughout your 4 and - or4 and 5 years here, you will be graduating with a bachelor's of commerce. so some studentsare confused or become confused thinking that they're in the wrong program, if they're inbusiness 1 but not in commerce. the reason being is we just - we have different namesfor our programs here, and each year - as you move on from level to level, it kind ofcan change. so when you're in first year you enrol in to business 1 and if all things gowell, i believe you need a 5 in order to progress

in to the second year of our commerce program, you then enter commerce 2, after commerce 2, depending on - again, your grades, youwill either enter into honours commerce, and that's an honours commerce level 3 and level4, and then you graduate and do wonderful things. or you enter in to just a bachelorof commerce, the difference between the two is to get an honours commerce degree, a bachelorof honours, so that's what they call it. you need to also carry that cumulative 5 averagethroughout, and when you have an honours degree, or in the honours program, there's more ofa selection of commerce electives that are available to you later on when you're in thirdand fourth year. and that can be really handy if you're going in to something like finance, and you want to take a really specialized

security analysis course. so just keep thatin mind. you always get that rumour when you're entering in to first year that oh my firstyear marks don't count, they do. they do not only for things like this, but also for thingslike the internship and exchange program, which i'll talk to you about later, you needan average in order to be able to complete one of those. so take your first year coursesseriously, there is always time to have fun but you have to remember why you're here.does that kind of clarify any questions about that? are we all good? you're entering into business, but you will slowly become commerce students. you're still part of our program,it's still the same thing, we're business students to, we just completed first year.so, when you're looking at course on mosaic,

once you've activated your id and you're inthe planning stage, this is what a typical course structure would look like, for allfaculties, not just commerce courses. so there's three main things to look at - well 4. firstwould be the faculty, so if this was an engineering course, it would say engineering 1e03, somost of your courses will be commerce. you do have electives that are out of the facultybut mostly commerce. the number, the 1. that indicates the level, so that's a first yearcourse, so when you're enroling and planning don't enrol in second, third or fourth - anythingthat starts with anything other then a one - don't go there. the e, that's just a uniqueidentifier, it really has no meaning to you, it's just used to differentiate the courses, then one other thing to key note is the 03,

or it will say 06. and that just indicatesthe length of the course, so if a course has the suffix of 03 that means it's a semestercourse, so it's either 1st semester or 2nd semester, if it says 06, that means it's afull year course, which means it spans from first semester all the way to second semester.from september to the end of april. if you're kind of confused by that, and thinking ohso - do i not have an exam half way, your midterm will happen when you're one semestercourses have their exam. so a one semester course, an 03 course will start in september, have exams in september - december, and then you're done. and then you have new coursesthat start in january. where as your 06 course will start in september, you'll have a midtermin december, during your december final exams

and then it'll finish and you'll have yourfinal exam in april. does that make sense to everyone? it really isn't that big of afactor but it's something to consider when you're trying to plan out your schedules.that way you don't accidentally overload one semester and under load the next. any questions?i speak kind of fast, so if anyone thinks i'm going like way to quickly, just pleasetell me to slow down. are we good? okay. oh, and i'm done. i come back though, so nexttime. - so well we're talking, if you have a questionplease but your hand up, ask questions, i want this to be informal. if you have any- ask questions. you're very quiet. - hello everyone, can you all hear me at theback? is that good? okay, i need the microphone,

i can't e quite that loud. so does anyonehave any guesses as to what this thirty stands for based on what we just heard about it?yeah? [audience answers] yes, exactly, so for those of you who didn't hear, you needto take 30 units per academic year. so what this works out to be is 10 courses throughoutyour time between september and april, 5 courses, typically, per term. so over your four yearsyou're going to end up taking 120 units, which is 40 courses. and i know sounds like so many but i promise youit will fly by. okay, so let's look at how those courses are going to be structured.first, focus on the top branch labelled fall/winter terms. so the fall term runs from septemberto december, while the winter term runs from

january to april. so this together compriseswhat is the standard academic year. mcmaster also offers courses in the summer, so we havetwo terms in the summer as well, which would be the spring term, from may to june and thesummer term from june to august. so courses that you take during these terms will be onan accelerated basis, so obviously you can see you've got half the amount of time. soa course that is, say taking in the fall, and has three hours of lecture every week.you'll have six hours of lecture every week for the same course taken during the springor summer term. so i would highly recommend taking courses during the spring or summerterm, i've done it every year, for me it was a great way to try and lighten up your loadthroughout the school year, so if you take

say two courses throughout the spring andsummer terms, then you take 4 and 4 during the actual academic year. does anyone haveany questions? no? okay, so then that leads in to a discussion of what constitutes a fulltime versus a part time student. so a full time student is someone who takes between18 and 30 units during the actual academic year. so this would be between 6 and 10 courses.a student who takes any less then that would be classified as a part time student. so,the decision as to whether you want to study on a full time or part time basis is totallyup to you, but it is important to note that most of you coming straight from high schoolwill be receiving entrance scholarships and in order to receive those scholarships youhave to maintain a full time status between

september and april. okay, this is the funpart. it's the courses that you have to take during your first year, so in your littlebooklets you should each have a page that looks like this. so if you want to just pullit out we can follow along together. awesome, okay so the first course on this list is commerce1aa3, which is an introductory finance - or sorry an introductory accounting course, whichis offered in the first term. you also have to take organizational behaviour offered inboth terms 1 and 2, i would personally recommend taking it during the second term because there'sa lot of group work involved with the class, so you may prefer to have that first termunder your belt so that you have all the skills and habits that you need in order to performto the best of your ability within a group.

next we have commerce 1e03 which was my absolutefavourite course in first year, it's an overview of business environment and organization,it's a really good foundational course which will provide you with a lot of the informationthat you may need for some of your more advanced courses throughout your four years here. wealso have commerce 1de0, does anyone notice anything a little bit strange about this?yeah? [audience answers] exactly, there's no credits, but it is mandatory. so make sureyou're enrolled in this course. so commerce 1de0 only runs for the first five weeks ofthe term and it provides an opportunity for you to learn more about the program, to getmore information about extra curriculars that you can get involved in, options for specialization, that type of thing. so even though you don't

get any credits for it, it certainly is worthwhile and you all need to take it. so we also have economics, we have two required economicscourses that you take in first year, so there's micro and macro. typically we suggest thatyou break these up if possible, so do one in each term. the math is where it can geta little bit confusing because all of you are going to have to take different courses.so if i could get all the students to stand up. awesome, okay so all of you who are standingright now, you all have to take math 1m03 in your second term, now if you took calculusin high school, sit down. perfect, if you're still standing, you also need to take math1f03 during your first term. okay? does anyone have any questions? no? okay, now everyoneelse stand back up. okay, now you can sit

down if you took data management in high school.okay, so if you're still standing, you have to take a statistics 1l03, which is the equivalentto data management in high school. okay, so you can all sit down. if anyone isn't clearon which math courses you need to take, before you leave today, make sure you talk to oneof the volunteers and we can definitely help you figure out which of the math courses youneed. so in addition to that we also get to take electives, so the number of electivesthat you can take will depend on how many math courses that you need to take. so thiscan range anywhere between 6 and 12. so the biggest piece of advice that i can give youfor electives is take something that you find interesting. i would highly recommend andsuggest that you don't go looking for what

other people call bird courses. look for somethingthat you're interested in, because something that you're super interested in will be easierfor you, right? so everyone's going to have different courses that they prefer to takeas their electives. do you have something to add laurie?- so when you're going to go in to enrol, we're going to get to that a little bit later.everybody has to take all the required courses. which are commerce 1e03, commerce 1aa, commerce1ba, commerce 1de0, which is not a credit course, you're going to have that zero creditcourse in your first term. you have to take the 2 econs, 1b, 1bb. you have to do the maths,so four - three commerce that count, the two econs, the math. if you do not have to takethe math 1f, or the stats 1l, you have 18

units of required course, and to total 20you have 12 units of electives. does that make sense? if you have to take math 1f orstats 1l that will put you up to 21 units of required course, and then you would need9 units of electives. so everyone is different in their first year as to the number of requiredcourses and electives that you take. do you understand that? also when you're enroling, make sure you do an even course load. 15 units in term 1, which is five courses and 15 unitsin term 2. you can not go over the 30 units, that is the maximum you can enrol in to. youcan go below the 30, if you wish to but you will be missing some course work. becauseyou do need to complete 30 units in each year to make a full total of 120 over the 4 years.whether you do it in your 4 years or 5 years

or 6 years is completely up to you, but youdo have to be sure that you have 30 units each year to complete each year. you can goin to 2nd year if you have 24 units to your credit at the end of your first year, butthat must include all your required courses and you're going to get to that right, buti wanted to stress that it has to include you're required courses, and you can onlybe outstanding on electives, and if you are outstanding, you do need to make it up ifyou're trying to do this in the four years. and that would be summer school and aileshis now going to move along and tell you more about it.- okay so then we can move on because i'm sure you all want to know how you can - ohyeah? [audience speaks] yeah, so the question

was where can you find a description of theelectives that you have the options to take. so online, if you search for the mcmasterundergraduate calendar you can go through and you can look at an explanation of eachcourse. within that you can also see the prerequisites for the course, so for any elective that youtake you just need to make sure that you meet the prerequisites course as well, does thatanswer your question? okay, perfect. are there any other questions? no? okay, awesome. sothis is mcmaster's grading scale, it's a little bit different then what most of you are probablyused to, so we use a 12 point scale, which can be then converted to either percentagesor letter grades, maybe something you're a little bit more comfortable with. so typicallyyour professors will provide you with marks

on your assignments in the form of eitherpercentages or letters, which you can then convert over to mcmaster's grading scale.okay, so of course you're all coming in to level 1 now but i'm sure you would like tostay for level 2, so you'll need to maintain a gpa of a 5, which if we looked back at ourscale we would see is a c or a minimum of a 63 percent. so just think about that fora second, because in order to come in to the commerce program here at degroote you allhad to maintain an average of 82.5 in high school. so we're only asking that you maintainan average of 63 in order to continue in our program. so just keep that in mind when you'recoming in and make sure that you have realistic expectations for your grades because chancesare they will fall a little bit. it's also

important to note that you are able to faila course in your first year as long as you fail no more then one required course, andno more then 6 units in total, in order to continue. does that make sense to everybody?okay so i will pass this off to alex now. - just a quick note about failing, if youhappen to fail a course it counts as a zero in your gpa, do you remember that chart thatwe had on earlier about your a, b, c, d. a zero, an f counts zero, and it will countin your gpa. so even if you do fail a required course, or you fail two electives, as longas you have a high gpa you can continue in the program. that zero could effect your averageto coming down below the five. if you go below the five you can not continue in to secondyear commerce. any questions so far? we're

doing such a great job, wow.- so who would be interested in going on an exchange during their time at mac? really?that's - why aren't there more hands up? it actually breaks my heart, no? maybe? okay.i kid you not i went on exchange, in third year - second semester, i went to the netherlandsfor a semester, so i lived there from january to june and it was single-handedly the bestexperience of my life, and i'm not just saying that. exchange allows you to not only travelwhile you're studying, you meet people from all over the world and you make pretty amazingfriendships and get to do some pretty crazy things. if you are interested in going onan exchange, you have to work for it a little. there is a minimum gpa that's required toapply. so you need to maintain a 7 throughout

your first and second year. so that's wheni was saying your first year marks count, they count for things especially like this.you apply to go on exchange at the end of your second year, and you can either travelat the beginning of your third year, at the end of your third year, so you can do a semesterabroad or you can do a full year abroad. you can go on exchange in your third year, orin your fourth year. ou a question, yes? [audience speaks], what's the percentage for a 7.0?i couldn't even tell you - 70? there you go, so it's pretty manageable. so you can eithergo in your third year or your fourth year. if you choose to do an internship, so if youdo your internship in your fourth year, which i'll get to. and you come back for a fifthyear, you can even go on a fifth year. similar

to what i did, i went on exchange in my thirdyear, i went on internship, and then i'm going again in january. yep? [audience speaks] sowhen you complete to apply for exchange, you have this gpa, but you also complete an application, and in your application you write - it's like a thousand word kind of, essay i would say,but i use that very loosely, explaining why you want to go to the destination where you'regoing, etc, etc. so, like you said, yes it is somewhat competitive, because it's a reciprocalprogram we have partners with these 25 countries. so you can go on exchange - i'm going to singapore,i went to netherlands, people go to australia, you can go to [?], you can go to china. really, there's a lot of opportunities there. we have students that come from those schools, toour school. so of course there's not unlimited

seats available, and that's why in your applicationyou'll actually be asked to make a top 3, so a top 3 choices and then there's preferencegiven to your first choice based on your grades, your application and once you submit thoseyou actually have an interview as well, and you meet with the exchange coordinator andyou get asked questions about your application and just some general questions. you'll findout more about exchange throughout your time at mcmaster. there's just 2 - a couple keythings to note, even if you're not in commerce, you can still go on exchange. so mcmasteras a university has a mac abroad program where as for business students we have what's calledbizx and the difference really between the two is bizx is just for business kids andyou usually go on exchanges with other business

students. otherwise there's really not toomuch of a difference there, there is flexibility. mcmaster in general has partnerships withmore schools, so if there's a destination you're really set on that isn't a bizx school, you can still participate in the mac abroad exchange, but it's just kind of easier whenyou go through the business school per say. the cool thing about exchange, especiallyexchange at mac is that you pay your tuition to mcmaster. so there's this preconceivednotion about exchange, that it's expensive. and don't get me wrong, if you choose to travelevery weekend and do fun and crazy things, yes it does add up. i can speak from experience, but with regards to paying an actual tuition, you pay the same amount that you would ifyou were a student attending mcmaster for

a semester here in hamilton. so that amountdoesn't increase, which is pretty awesome because when you go to study abroad, usuallyyou have to pay international student fees and they're usually more expensive then yourregular tuition. so i think that's a pretty neat feature that a lot of students don'tknow about when you're trying to subsidize the costs of your exchange. also, there'sa mcmaster exchange grant or scholarship that if you meet this minimum requirement of a7 gpa, actually - to be honest i don't know if there's a cap on how many of these scholarshipsthey distribute. but they give you a thousand dollars. so personally, i used that a thousanddollars towards my flight. and that covered the cost of my round trip airfare. so thereis opportunities there, there's also other

external exchange scholarships throughoutthe university that are available to people. i have lots of friends that applied for those, the application deadline for that is pretty early.i unfortunately missed it, so i couldn'treap those benefits but they got money from both scholarships and used that towards coveringtheir housing. so yes it could add up, but if you plan for it, and it's something thatyou really want to do - and you know that when you're in first year, it's definitelyworth every single cent. i wouldn't be going on another exchange if i didn't actually believethat. so, it's pretty awesome. any questions about exchange? yep? [audience speaks] noit isn't. so it's similar to if you were attending university here, when you pay your tuitionto mcmaster, it doesn't include your res costs.

that's additional, now with that being saidmy personal situation, when i lived in the netherlands, and again it varies country bycountry. my rent was actually cheaper there then what i pay here, and when i got the costof my flight covered, i guess you could say that my cost of living on exchange was moreaffordable then it was here. so don't, again, rule that out just because it's going to beanother expense. if you're going to be a student living off campus anyways in hamilton, you'regoing to have to pay for rent. so yeah, did i answer your question? any other questionsabout exchange? i honestly can not stress enough, maybe if it's something that doesn'tinterest you now, but keep it in the back of your mind per say, because there's nota lot of opportunities you get to travel the

world and take courses to do it - oh! andi forgot the most important part, when you're on exchange - and this is going to be a dealbreaker i think, when you're on exchange your courses are pass/fail. so that whole like12 point grade scheme does not exist. you either just need to pass the course - no,you just pass the course. you're not going to fail a course. you're just going to passit. which is great, right? so like when you're friends are studying and you're travellingand you're kind of like, afraid because you should maybe be studying, it's okay. becauseyou're going to pass, you are. so it's great. does that maybe change some peoples opinionsnow? i see two questions, we'll start here first then you. [audience speaks] so it justpops up on your transcript as a pass and then

it doesn't affect your grade. it doesn't bringdown your grade or overall gpa. [audience speaks] no, because it's added towards that.with that being said if you're going in to accounting as your major, talk to sushan ori afterwards because cpa requirements there's only certain courses you can do outside ofcanada. so because i was going in to accounting and majoring in accounting i did summer schoolto get those courses done in this country, so that i could do other courses abroad. sotalk to us after if you're interested in doing exchange and you want to do accounting. yes, there was another question. no? oh, okay. any other questions? okay, so third year, you can do - or fourth year, you can do exchange then in fourth year you can do internship.so how many people would be interested in

or thinking about doing internship, and likeevery hand should be up here. you - it's a paid internship, which is pretty hard to comeby, paid internship with great work experience as a student. so what makes mcmaster differentthen a school such as laurier or waterloo where there's a built in co-op into theirprogram, is that we don't have a co-op. co-op is you work, you study, you work, you study.so you have these chunks of times where you're forced to be outside of school doing work.our internship is 100 percent optional, you don't have to participate in this program,if you do you complete the internship and it's either a 12 month internship or a 16month internship in your fourth year and then you come back and you do a fifth year. inorder to apply to do your internship you need

to have an average of 7 again, so there'scommon trends here. 7 is the average you need to have, so you decide whether or not you'reinterested in doing an internship at the end of your second - at the end of your secondyear, and then you apply for the internship program which we call it 3in0, that's thecourse code. and if you're going on internship, in your first semester of third year you willneed this course called 3in0, it's not a graded course, it's another pass/fail course andwhat the course does is it prepares you for corporate work environment. so it teachesyou how to make, like polish your resume, your cover letter, interview tips, thingslike that. there's speakers that come in, it's mandatory attendance, that's how youpass the course, and once you've passed, it

will be at the end of your semester - so indecember. the job board opens up in january and then you get access to the job board.and you go through the whole interview process, so there's tons of companies that partnerwith mcmaster that hire for internship and they will post these jobs in the job board, you can apply with your cover letter and resume. and then they do, mostly on campus, but there'ssome off campus, but mostly on campus, interviews. and there's different rounds, so there's threerounds of etc. etc. not every student in the program will get a job, you still have totry and work, and interview and network etc. but the placement rate, i would say, is extremely, extremely high. i don't know off the top of my head but i think every person i know hashad an internship spot - you know anyone?

it's pretty high, it's not something to belike "oh, i don't think i'm going to get a job". you probably will. and it's great becauseagain, it's paid. so you get some work experience and then you come back and you get to joinall your friends again at school. any questions about that? no? yes? [audience speaks] sorry,i honestly could not hear you. [audience speaks] no, so you don't pay full tuition, you paya - i don't know if it's going to change so i'm not going to give you the number but it'sa fraction of the tuition that you pay as a fee in order to enter in to the program, and that covers the costs of - when you're on the job, people from the school come outand they meet with your boss and what not, and you have on-sight visits and things likethat. it also covers any of the administration

fees with regards to the job board and stuff, and it covers the cost of the [?], it's not like thousands and thousands of dollars, it'sjust like - it's really not bad at all, but yeah. any other questions? wow i answeredeveryone, okay. - alright so just before i start off withminors i just want to add on to what alex is talking about. both - i also did exchangeand it was a wonderful experience and i am going on my internship, both are totally manageable, you can do both without any problem, with out it disrupting your courses, so don't worryabout that. if you're able to do both, do both. it will be a great thing to experienceand to attach to your resume as well. so, minors. so just a way to add a little bitof a dimension to what you graduate with,

so minors are usually - are for the studentsin their fourth or fifth years and they consist of courses that are outside of commerce, andyou have 24 units to them. so a lot of what students do is use the courses that they havealready gotten, that are mandatory in their program, and use those to build off a minor.for example, economics, you can finish with an economics minor very easily because youhave your two economics in first year, your micro and macro, and then in second year youalso have a - i forgot what the title of the course is right now, but it is another economicscourse - 2x03- yes, and in economics one of the finance courses also goes towards your- 2fa3

- 2fa3 also goes towards your economics minorif you're interested in that, but you're also to do many other minors, a lot of businessstudents also do computer science, political science, things like that. we also have anew program, minor in place, that's an interdisciplinary minor in sustainability and it's a wide rangeof courses that you can take that kind of bring together this minor and we have brochuresup here with more information about that, it's brand new and you can learn more aboutthat through them - the brochure. so, study breaks, so you might not have a march break, but you do get two - three study breaks throughout your time during your two semesters. one ofthem, which was just recently introduced last year was the one in the fall and these midterm breaks they allow you to kind of have

a time to kind of take it easy, with whatevercourses and assignments that you have going on, just so that you can focus because thisis really all about you. because we know that it's tough to transition in to university,so we want you guys to have a little bit of time to kind of catch up on what you needwhether it's your school work, or you know - sleep in most cases, but yeah. so this yearit's going to be running from october 10th, to 16th, and it falls during thanksgivingday as well so you'll have a chance to enjoy some turkey at home. but there's also onefor the winter break, but that's after exams, so you'll have those two weeks to be withfamily or travel if you really want to. but you have that break, as well as another breakin february - mid february. that's kind of

the what everyone considers a spring breakeven though it's usually quite snowy outside. it's a great time for you to really catchup on your studies, don't think of it as a time to kind of let loose and forget thatyou're in school because it really is worth it to use your time wisely during that week.your exam periods - they happen at the end of your first term and your second term, sothis year from december 22nd you'll be doing your semester 1 exams and same thing winterterm you'll have, at the end of your second term, april 11th to 27th. so these exams, the schedule comes out usually mid semester, near the - a good chunk before the exams actually start, and it's a good idea not to plan any trips

until you are done your exams, because eventhough you're exams might say you have an exam on the 18th for example, and you havetickets to go cuba the next day, this might not always be an easy thing for you to dobecause if there's, for example, a snow storm on one of the days. your exams can get pushedto another date in the exam period, okay. so if you are interested in going away withyour family, going on some sort of trip, going back home - depending on where you're from.wait until your exams are done. you don't know what can happen and if you don't do yourexam it's very difficult for you to do it at a later time, this isn't high school, youcan't ask your professor to do it the next day or the day before. the teachers don'tcare if you're going on vacation, okay? if

for whatever reason you do miss an exam thereare - there is a differed exam schedule but you do need to go through a process to actuallyget to that exam stage. is there any questions on exams? no? okay. so missed coursework, because sometimes emergencies do happen. sometimes you might have had a family emergency, youmay gotten the flu all of the sudden and well what about the midterm that you have tomorrow,or the assignment you have to have to hand in today. so we do have a mcmaster studentabsence form, otherwise known as msaf and you're going to hear it a lot during yourtime here, you're going to hear your friends "oh, i've gotta msaf this, i've gotta msafthat" and it's a really great thing to do when you kind of find yourself in a stickysituation because it helps you i guess still

keep, or somehow get that mark if your goingto miss something. so you only get one per term, and it's during - what is the graceperiod? three days? - three days- so yes, thank you. three days where once you submit your one msaf you can put whateverassignment, mid term, test or quizzes that you have that are under 25 percent worth ofyour mark. so if on monday you realize you have the flu, and you don't think you'll beable to think clearly for that quiz you have that same night, but you also know that youhave an assignment due on wednesday that you kind of haven't started yet because well, you've been watching too much netflix probably, but there's also - there's a chance that youcan put all three of those - well sorry, two

i just said. in to that one submission. ifyou do only the one, and submit it, you won't be able to put the - something that's twodays later on to that same submission. okay? i think that's it. any questions? alrightso we'll be moving on in a moment towards the more technical stuff, how to registerfor courses, how to use mosaic, but right now we're going to be taking a five minutebreak just so you guys can stretch your legs. if you guys could take the time to actuallyfill out the questionnaires that have been handed out to you, it's completely anonymousso don't worry, it's not going to effect your courses.- before you stand up, please sit down. i do want to introduce doctor emad mohammad,he is our associate dean and he is going to

say a few words of welcome but while he'sdoing that the students are going to come up and collect those little sheets and thenwe will have a break after that. - so it turns out i'm the only one standingbetween you and the break. alright i'll make it quick. i just would like to welcome youon behalf of the dean of the school of business and the faculty of the school of business.welcome you to degroote, we're talking about - you know, this is so much information toprocess for you. we don't expect you to know everything all the time. the purpose of thissession is just to show you what to look for in the information here, be sure that youalways stay informed because the ignorance of the rules or regulations is not an excusefor, you know - is not an acceptable excuse.

we had situations where unfortunately everyyear, where students miss graduation, they don't graduate on time, just because theydid not take the right courses. i'm not saying they did not take 40 courses, they actuallydid take 40 courses but they were not the 40 courses to graduate. more important issometimes you miss on big opportunities like scholarships, we have tons of them. mind youthey're not lots of money, it's a couple thousand here, 700 thousand here but they add up, andeverything counts, you know? so make sure that you always, always stay informed. anotherthing that i'm - in my civilian life i am an accounting professor, alright? and that'swhat i love to do, so you'll be my students in the first week of class. so i'll meet youin the first week of september and at that

time you will establish that university isactually a whole different experience from high school. there's not going to be one wayof teaching, although i'd like to talk a lot. but i would actually like you to be a partneron your own learning and we'll explain what that means later on. final, i want to emphasizethat you are not alone, keep that in mind. when you come to the degroote school of businessyou are part of a big family, we are here to support you. we have academic advisers,we have staff here who's job is to support you, so please let us know if you have anydifficulties. one of the unfortunate aspects of my job is the dealing with petitions, atthe end of the year, the grades are released, some students find themselves, you know - ifyou picked up a difficulty in university and

are ineligible to move to the second or thirdyear, ineligible to graduate, and that's when they submit their petitions. well i had adeath in the family, i had a financial difficulty, i had health issues, mental issues, emotionalissues, we actually would like to know about these things before hand. it's much more helpfulfor us to know, share this with us - and by the way, i guarantee you our academic advisersare very discreet. even i don't know the names of the students who have issues, when theacademic advisers approach me and say "well this student, had let's say financial difficulty.fired from a job or something like that, and they are stressed out and they cannot do theexams, we'd like you to give them differed exam privilege". i don't know who that studentis, i don't know who that student is, so don't

be afraid, i know these issues and mattersare private and you don't want to get in trouble. no one is going to know about it other thenthe academic advisers with whom you are dealing, okay? so please let us know, we are here foryou. and again, welcome to the degroote school of business, and i look forward to seeingyou in september. thanks. - so instead of showing you guys picturesi'm actually going to walk you through my actual account and register in a class soyou can see exactly what to do. just before i start. could you put up your hand if you'vealready activated your macid. okay, if you have not activated your macid put up yourhand. don't be shy. okay, so everybody has activated their macid which is basically thefirst component of your mcmaster e-mail, so

the way you log in to mosaic, go to mosaic.mcmaster.cathis is the screen you're going to see, you're going to use your macid and then basicallylog in with the password you set it up with. and this is going to be your home screen.so a few key things in your home screen, on the left you see it's a new component, andthat's mcmaster wide news, that's sometimes really important stuff, sometimes it doesn'treally impact you as a student at all. and then in the middle area, avenue to learn isyour hub for all the classes, i'll go over, i'll also do the whole log in after i do themosaic enrolment and i'll show you what it is. mcmaster student e-mails, so we're ona googel server, so basically once you click on that you have to sign in on a differentserver site, but once you do sign on it goes

back to the google server and that's yourmcmaster e-mail. that's basically what you use to communicate to all your professors, the professors will not reply if it's not from a mcmaster e-mail. so keep that in mindif you want any communication to be done, that's the way of communication, and you canadd it to your iphones or androids, blackberry's whatever you can imac it and it's very straightforward, it's not hard. another key thing is the campus notifications, so there area lot of times, you know - they'll do a lot of fire alarm testing or there's a securitysystem. the red polls that you probably see on campus, so they test those. or there'san emergency, there's a way you can sign up for these notifications, either via e-mailor even getting a text and they only use it

for emergencies only so it's not a stab atanywhere or form. so that's that kind of portal, and the rest typically doesn't really applyto you until you are in your final year. so once you're in mosaic, the most importantmenu for you guys would be the student center. so once you click on that it has four differentcomponents. so as you see the first one is the academic, and that's where all your classesthat you have taken or currently are enroled in, you will see. when you log in, you actuallywill not see anything here, just because you haven't had a chance to enrol. i had my enrolmentlast week so that's, those are the classes that i have enroled in and you see that. toactually know when exactly you can enrol, on the right side, under the enrolment datesub menu, it will say which day but that's

not it. everybody is assigned a differenttime on a different day. so after you click on details, and this is where, this says at8:30 am on the 22nd i can start enroling in classes. so everyone of you will have a date, either the 29th or after, and you're given a specific time, and until that time you cannot enrol in anything. however you can plan, what you will be taking, and that's wherei'm going to walk you through. it's a very easy process, it saves you time once your8 o'clock actually hits, or whatever time that you have, actually hits. so we're goingto go back to the student center and we're going to show you how to actually set up aclass. so once you're at the academic part, you're going to click on enrol, it's goingto take you to here and basically breaks it

down by term. so at mcmaster the term thatstarts in september is called fall, the term that starts in january is called winter. solet's say i want to pick a class for the september term, so i click 2016, i go continue. okay,so this is the screen you're going to see. so basically you have three options of choosingor finding a class. class search - basically you're searching everything that's kind ofopen or offered. my requirements is a system that's actually integrated to you as a student,so it knows what your required courses are, you can do it that way. or my planner, thisis another tool you can actually plan ahead to see exactly what classes you need to takeevery year. but let's just do the most used way, which is basically keeping it on classsearch and then clicking search, it prompts

you to this screen. here, what you want todo is click on select subject and now these are all the subjects that mcmaster offers.one thing, all of our business classes are under commerce. so you go to the letter c,click on it, scroll down, you find commerce and then you click select. to keep your searcheswide, don't do anything else, just select the course. the subject and just click search.if it has more then 50 classes to offer, you'll see this message. do you want to proceed.typically, yes you do. so you just click okay, wait for it to load. the more classes thatsubject offers, the longer it will take to load. typically it's up to a minute, it'sfaster today. there you go. so now what you see is all the classes that are in commercethat are offered at mcmaster for that specific

term. so before i go in to the actual class,i want to go over this legend. so there's three colours and three shapes you'll see.if it's a circle and green, it means that class is open for registration and you have- you can get a seat, as long as you meet the prerequisites. the blue square means it'sclosed, that means it's full, so you cannot get in to those classes. and then the triangle, the yellow triangle, there's a wait list and that will be dealt through one of the academicadvisers. there's not many classes that do wait listing, but there are a few that maydo it. so you have to contact your academic adviser just through e-mail, or going to visitthem at the office, and then they'll kind of figure out if it's too long of a wait listor not. just the three legends, so basically

i'm going to go to a class, sadly i cannotregister in any of the classes that you have to take because i've already completed them,so i'm going to find a random class that i meet the prereq's for, so you see the entireprocess, i'm literally just searching - there we go, okay. let's say i love finance, andthis class right here is what i want. so commerce 4fu3, behavioural finance.so once you've foundthe class that you either need or are interested in, i can see straight off the bat, that'sa green circle, that means it's an open class. so i'm going to click select class. so nowthis is a little bit more about the class that i just selected, so you see there's theopen again and then here you see the prerequisites required. so it says that you must have commerce3fa3, which is a third year mandatory class

for finance and everybody has to take it,and be registered in level 3 or above. okay, so i meet both of those requirements, andi can move forward. let's say that you don't meet the requirement and you try to move forwardit will not process that, it will automatically stop if you don't meet the prerequirementsand you cannot enrol in this class. okay? so i'm okay with this, what i'm going to do,i know, now is that i'm in section one, so that's core 1. so core 1 is basically yourlectures, is your sections as you would have different classes. so you might have two mathclasses, they don't really mean much, it's just the different times they're offered at.you know what day the classes are, you know which rooms the classes are on campus andyou know who the professors are. so i'm going

to click next, it is now added to my shoppingcart. so shopping cart is basically the exact same thing if you do online shopping. youbasically select the sizes, everything else that you need to know, and add it to yourcart, and once you have everything ready to go you just click proceed or check-out. similarconcept. so what you can do is you can actually have all the classes you want, so you canhave all of your 5 classes in your shopping cart, one at a time you can add them and youcan go to step 2 of 3, all together. rather then doing one class at a time. so i'm justdoing one as an example but you can have five of the same way. and then you basically clickproceed to step 2 of 3. so you won't be able to proceed until it's your enrolment time.it will give you an error, it will say "you

are not registered to enrol currently" justkeep that in your cart and then it will let you proceed to the next step once you havethe enrolment date and you actually have the time as well. so for me, my time was lastweek, so i can actually proceed - i can show you what it will look like. so i click here.this is all the information, it's like alright, are you sure this is the class you want? thisis the time, this is what it is, these are the prereq's, and then finish enrolling isall i click on. i'm not going to do it because i don't really want this class, but that'sit. you click finish enrolling, and you won't be able to come to this step unless you actuallyare after your time. if you start at 8am, if you go right at 8am you can come to thisstep, but before that you will not be prompted

to this step. any questions? yep? [audiencespeaks] exactly, so you can actually plan right now and then once it's your enrollmenttime you literally - it'll take you a minute or so. it took me 33 - 34 seconds for me toregister in all of the classes for both my terms. but the way, you might have a biggerchallenge then what i did, is that - the way mcmaster works is that fourth years go beforethird years, third years go before second years, second years go before first years.so you kind of get the short end of the stick and your registration starts next week. sosome of the classes that you might want, especially your electives, they might be filled already.[audience member speaks] i was kind of more eluding about the cores, you might be stuckwith the 8:30 core rather then the 2:30 core,

but yeah. so there are reserved seats butyou might be able to get in to the class, it's just that not at the time that you hopedto be in your schedule. yes? [audience speaks] yes, it's the same professor teaching at differenttimes, so it could be either or, it truly depends on the class itself. for most commerceclasses in first year it's the same professor teaching all cores. so as you would assumean 8:30 class is not a popular option. people would rather choose afternoon classes, soall the afternoon classes might be filled by the time you get your enrollment time, but the class it self might still be open, it's just that you might have to take the8:30 section, or the section that has a class on friday and monday. right? so that's that,so i actually want to show you something,

that may help you . so this is going to beyour best friend. unless you love excel, because i love excel and i'll talk about that a littlebit later. so timetable generator, we're one of the lucky few universities that have ourentire class system integrated to this website. so you select your university, so we wantto do 16-17. so what you can do is you can plan your multiple options, like you know, your ideal schedule, your back up of an ideal schedule, and your back up of a back up, justin case the cores you want to get in to are full, or your electives that you want to getin to are filled before you even get a chance to kind of log on. and what this is is basicallyit creates your schedule so the exact same process i used - as you do on mosaic. so youchoose commerce, click next, you select the

course - i'm going to show you the one i justchose, so it was 4f, so there we go. so this is a bad example because it only has one core, but for classes that has multiple - i'll show you another example, actually i'll show youthat one. and what it does it shows you, it creates a schedule for you right away. right?so you kind of already have an idea of what your schedule is going to look like. so fora class that, let's just add another course. so let's say it's something that you'll betaking, commerce 1a03. so now you see there's four different cores, and lets say i wantto do core 1, and there's a lot of tutorials. lets say tutorial 20. and there we go, soterms 2 - it populates it for me. so this is a good way to sort of plan your process,to actual visualize your content but you can

also do that on mosaic because you know youhave - it says your date and time, what time - times your classes are. but yeah, so likei don't mind using that or if you love excel, which i kind of depend on. what i do is thatthere's multiple cores offered, i create my own excel sheet and kind of plot all of thepossible options, just because it's easier for me to play on excel then it is for meto play on this and wait for the internet to kind of load, you can do those two things, and it's the same effective - the same result at the end. any other questions on the actualregistration? yep? [audience speaks] on mosaic? so, it will be the exact same way, so if thisclass had a tutorial it wouldn't let me finish enrolling until i also selected a tutorial.so lets say if i were to - so i'm going to

do a quick search so you see how it wouldlook like for lets - commerce 1a03. so you basically selecting commerce, searching. okay,so you see, anything that starts with a c is your lectures. you see there's three lectures, actually 1a03 could be a better option. so there you go, that's a class. it's a secondyear class but you see how the first portion is all lectures, co1, co2, co3 and then rightbelow, anything that starts with a t is your tutorial. so it lists all the tutorial timesas well, and then once you select the core, it will ask you to select the tutorial beforeyou can move on. so it's integrated in to your actual selecting process. any other questions?okay, so once you have enrolled, after your enrollment date, a few hours after you wouldsee a list like this. and these are all the

classes that you're registered in, in thatspecific term. so this is for only 2016. and what you can do is this is your final check, the same concept of the weekly schedule, and this is your weekly schedule and the classes.it has the exact same information as the time table generator, with exact classes, whatcore, what is it - if it's a lecture or tutorial, the times and the location. so everythingis there for you, right off the bat. so that's your enrolment of the class, you can do multipleat the same time, but i highly recommend having a few back ups just in case the cores thatyou want to get in to are full, and then sometime in mid - mid to late july, to early august, right here where it says you have no outstanding charges, your tuition is going to show, soit's going to say your tuition is so and so,

your entrance scholarship is credited off,and then the total amount that's due is going to be a little similar box as you see up herebut for the financial - finance in general. so moving to the second point, which is thefinance. this is where you check all your bursaries, your scholarships, apply for scholarships- that's anything to do with money, it's here. so there's a few options for when you do yourtaxes, your t22020a's, you can find them here as well. so that's your finance hub and academichub, other then enrolling you can see proof of enrollment, you can add/drop, swap, youcan see your transcripts and you can see what the requirements are every year that you moveforward with. so everything is in that academic hub. so now everybody just pretend you don'tsee my address because i'm going to go on

the personal information hub, this is basicallyyour hub for all your personal information, so that's your primary address, so it's rightthere a the bottom, your emergency contact, your temporary address if you're staying offcampus or staying on residence, your phone number - best way to reach you, your secondarye-mail if the mcmaster servers are down, how will we communicate? so that is like verykey to keeping up to date, especially if you're moving or having a new number that you changeover and over again, so keep that updated because that's how mcmaster - that's the onlyway mcmaster can get in touch with you, whatever is in that little personal hub. in terms ofmosaic this is basically the only tab you need to worry about, you wouldn't have thefaculty center, that's only for ta's, if there

are ta's for any of your classes. my work,if you don't work for mcmaster in any way or form you won't have much in there either,so this is basically your student center. let's say you get lost at some point in thefuture, student guide has six different options for you to kind of go step by step or followon videos on what it is - like if it's academic related, personal information, financial matter, some type of government documentation that you need from mcmaster or your faculty, itkind of walks you through how do get it, which button to click, which link to click. so itkind of walks you through on that one. so key dates, so the fifteenth now is quiet close- it's actually september fourteenth to drop or make changes to your classes without gettingthat fee. for term two it is longer so you

can actually keep editing your term two throughoutthe entire term one as well as up in to the first two weeks in january, so again you'renot stuck with it just starting next week, you have lots of time to kind of look aroundfor the classes - that you - that fit the best with your schedule. and then the cancellingis what laurie mentioned about the withdrawal, november fourth is - it will - it cannot dropthe class after that day, okay? and then march 10th is second term. for payments, so if you'renot on osap all your payment tuition for term 1 is due september 1st, 2016. which is justbefore you start classes, if you are on osap you do get a leeway of 22 days, so your paymentsare due september 22, just because osap relieves funding in the first two weeks of september.for winter term, it's the same thing - for

winter term january 1 is for non-osap studentsand for osap students it ends up being january 22. if you want to make a payment you canmake a payment all - for your entire full year all at once, in september. so that'sup to you, in terms of making your payments, it's either through your banking, so it'sinteractive or credit card, but there is a fee of 1.75 percent if you are paying by creditcard, but that is an option if you choose to go that way. okay, so you can have yourphones out, you can take a picture, a reminder iof key dates. so you start registration forbusiness 1, june 29. a few of you guys may have a later date, it's all randomized, butthe earliest you have is the 29. august 27 to september 3 is the welcome week - welcomeweek. so that's basically what you will see

a hundred of degroote students and other facultiesdressed up in full suits - over alls. august 30 is a faculty day, so basically it's a daywhere all first year commerce students are going to be - do you want to tell them whatthat day is? - sure, it's the commerce carnival, so essentiallywe have all of our faculty together, having guest speakers come in, if you're in to accountingwe have someone from cpa that comes in and people will give a speech. it's a great dayto get to know other people within your program because since you're in commerce you havelots of group projects, so it's nice to know some familiar faces when you go in to yourclasses and your tutorials. so i think one of the successful - or key things to beingsuccessful in university is having good group

members. so yeah, you get to meet people fromour faculty, that day. and you'll also meet all of the reps, so in case we didn't havea chance to move you in or anything like that, you'll be able to meet all of us, operators, you can ask us questions. we also have a faculty night.- oh yeah, so it's not up here but faculty night's the thursday- yeah, so september first all students will go with their faculty for faculty night andyou do fun - i'm not going to allude to what it is, so you'll have to come out and seewhat it is, but it's usually a very fun evening. and then there's also something called thefaculty-fest and that's an afternoon of activities during welcome week, it's on wednesday, whereyou meet some actual faculty, so professors

and teachers and what not, and the degrootecommerce society, that student council i told you about is pretty active in that event.and you'll be able to meet those leaders, that's where you can find more about waysthat you can get involved. - yep [audience speaks]- move in will be the 27th and 28th, it's allocated based on what residence you'll beliving in. do you guys know what residences you're in? no? okay, so then that day youwill find out afterwards. half of you move in on the saturday, half of you move in onthe sunday. you get more details about that. - and the good thing is that the classes don'tstart until september 6, so you have a full week of welcome week then everybody has thelong weekend off so if you want to go back

home, or just kind of relax, you know - sleepin. you'll have the opportunity to do that as well.- so we've kind of mentioned a couple of these events or things that - ways you can get involvedin first year. i can not stress enough how much - how important it is, i'm sure you'veheard it by - from so many people, and you even heard it when you were in high school.but you're experience at mcmaster university is only a fraction, made in the class room.and at least mine was and i can honestly say that my most memorable experiences, and whatmade my university experience as great as it was was everything outside of class. yeahyou're here to get an education, and a degree at the end of the day, but you might as wellenjoy yourself well you're doing it. that's

the way i see it. so the great thing is wehave a lot of different clubs, and societies and committees, whatever you want to callit that host events and do different - different events i would say that cater towards youracademic but also social aspects, so we talked a little about faculty day. come out to those, they're open for everyone, it's a great way to meet people, even if you think it mightnot be your thing. there's no harm in coming out for ten minutes and if you really wantto leave - we are not hand cuffing you to be there, you can leave if you want. but atleast you tried it and you saw it. so there's that, throughout the year the dcs will hostdifferent events, social events - so we have mystery road bus, you buy a ticket, we putyou on a bus and we bring you to a mystery

destination that you don't know what it is,if it sounds really fun - yeah it is. clubsfest, so clubsfest there's a mcmaster wide clubsfestthat happens during welcome week, each faculty, the msu in general, has clubs that come outand you can see the different clubs that are there and join them. also some of the sportsteams have them, then degroote itself has it's own mini-clubsfest per say, it's called- it happens afterwards. it - you can - that's how you can find out how you can be involvedin the degroote finance association, or the degroote accounting association, then if you'rein to accounting there's cpa night which i highly recommend going to if you want to somehow land a job for the summer in accounting and things like that, it's a great way tonetwork. talk with the dcs, first year council,

so back when i was in first year i was thefirst year rep, and the first year rep is in charge of helping along with the firstyear council which [?] was actually on my first year council with me, back in the day.wow we're old, and you're in charge of leading a whole bunch of events in first year. sothey have a dodgeball tournament, there's different social things that go on - it changesyear to year but it's a great - if you want to somehow get involved but you're not surehow when you're in first year, apply to do that. i can definitely say i met a lot ofmy commerce friends because i was involved with the dcs and first year rep. so it wasan awesome experience. the commerce formal happens in january, it's just like exactlywhat it sounds like , a formal. it's a great

time though again, i'm really biased. a lotof my friends are in commerce and i really like the faculty so i liked going to eventslike this, but if you're not - commerce formal isn't your thing, the msu has a formal, everyfaculty has one, so if you have lots of different dresses to wear there's lots of differentformals to go to. and then company information sessions - yep? [audience speaks] yep, ohyeah. commerce one is always the best one. it's a fun night. the company informationsession, so a lot of companies do hire from mcmaster students whether it be summer jobsor jobs after graduating, so those company information sessions you can sign up for onoscar plus, do you guys know what oscar plus is? no, okay. oscar plus is this website that'sused for - it's like a mcmaster job board,

for jobs for mcmaster students that othercompanies post on our website. so there's a business student section where there's jobsspecifically tailored for business students. you'll use oscar plus when you're in - atinternship course 3in0 to apply for jobs, but there's also jobs that are not relatedto internship that are open to everyone. so if you kind of are interested, google it,check it out, you should be able to log in with your macid and just fool around and seehow it works but oscar plus is a pretty cool tool, that's where you'll register for thesecompany information sessions, lots of companies hire from here and even just coming out - you'renot trying to get a job, or just find out more about the company. i used to work forlabatt and i was the mcmaster labatt campus

rep, and i was in charge of organizing theseinformation sessions and a lot of students that came out that were in first year thatweren't looking for a job but they just wanted to find out more about labatt per say. there'salways food included, so like - it's a great - it's a great reason to come out. you'lllearn pretty fast that there's free food at a lot of these things. any questions aboutevents? no? - thanks alex. when you're - how many studentsare going to be moving in to residence? show of hands. and how many will be living at home?okay, so i have two reps here from the society of off-campus students, when you're movingin to residence you're going to partake in all your welcome week activities with thepeople in your residence, but also with the

green suits. but for the students who willbe living at home we have a special society for you, and we're going to hear more aboutthem. - hi guys, so my name's meera and i'm an offcampus rep as i've previously mentioned. so i really highly recommend all of you guyscoming out to welcome week, because the reason why we decided to be reps is so that you guyscan have an awesome transition. one quick thing i want to mention is that our themeis accessibility so we want to make sure all you off campus students are just as welcomeas all the on campus students. so you can be a commuter for four years and still finda way to contribute to society, i've done that. i'm a commuter student from mississauga,i take a bus in everyday and i plan to do

so in my final year. and i still found a wayto interact with society, whether it be being a ta, being a welcome week rep. you guys willfind many opportunities to involve yourself in degroote, you just have to find them, andreally want them. and i know you guys will. - hi guys my name is aneeka and like meerasaid that there are many opportunities to get involved. the first step to getting involvedis actually showing up at - on welcome week. that's your first step to getting involvedbecause i read your questionnaires and a lot of you guys said that you were afraid of gettinginvolved, like you might not get involved. so that's the first step, and in additionthis year we started something new that's called the welcome week sneak peek. so we'redoing it for different cities, so we have

it for mississauga, we have it for toronto, later in july we have it for west hamilton. so if you plan to be like in hamilton, ifyou're in that time - or if you're in mississauga or toronto - it's on our facebook page, soi know the ones that are in mississauga that are going to [?] and it's completely freeso it's just a bonding for incoming first year reps and we can give you advice wheneveryou want. also our registration, like for registration will be open so you're allowedto buy memberships during welcome week and i'm not sure about what the prices this year, but you can easily do that and if you have any more questions about living off campusask me or meera and we'll just pass it on to kelly.- okay i'm going to try to be as quick as

possible, i know you guys have been bombardedwith information like all afternoon.so i mentioned earlier about the fyo program which standsfor first year orientation program, essentially what it is is it's a mentorship program whereyour first years are matched with an upper year student, and that mentorsip lasts forthe entire year and potentially for the rest of your lives if you guys become friends.during welcome week, like alex was saying before, you get to meet a bunch of green suitreps and they'll be walking around, you might find something in common with one of themand you can e-mail the ... that e-mail down there, you'll be getting another copy of thate-mail later on during welcome week. you can send an e-mail to that e-mail there and say"hey, i met so-and-so during welcome week,

i want them to be my mentor for the year"and you'll get matched up with that mentor and throughout the year it's just someonethat you can hang out with, have coffee with. my mentor actually gave me like old examsand old like notes, that he took for his classes which was great study tools for me, and alsothroughout the year we hold social events and academic study workshops so you have likean upper year student helping you throughout the year.- thank you della, so quickly i just want to make sure that you are aware that we dohave our own student wellness center in the basement of the student center so the studentcenter is a real hub where all your services are available. if you're going to do a tourat the end we will certainly, i'm sure, take

you through the student center, in the basementis the student wellness center. it is where you can go if you're sick and you need medicalattention. so it's like a, like a drop-in medical health center. if you're going tomiss any components of your coursework, like a midterm or a test or quiz, you need medicaldocumentation because you're going to miss that, you can go there and get the forms filledout, but also get the medical attention that you need because we really want you to getwell so you can get back on the path to good health. also down in the basement is studentaccessibility services so if there are any students who have any type of disability,we have the student accessibility services available for you and i do have some brochuresat the front about their services, whether

it's a learning disability or whatever youmay be suffering from, you can get registered with them and they will provide you with accommodationsfor whatever you need according to your disability, whether you need longer periods to do yourtests, if you need to do tests in a separate room, whatever your needs they will assessyou and provide you with whatever you need. so please, if you do require that help, pleasereach out and register with them because it's very important that you get the help thatyou need. also the student success center is just off the student center in gilmourhall, it is an area where you can go for help, regarding your academic skills development.so i am an academic adviser, i help you in making sure you get through your degree right, making sure you have all your courses, that

we make sure you have been getting throughthe courses that you need to take. the student success center will help you if you have problemswith procrastination, time management, stress management, how to write a good essay, howto do any of your academic skills, they have workshops throughout the year and you canalso get a personal academic skills adviser if you need, you can take an essay in andthey will help proof it and make sure you have the proper grammar and structure, becausewe have very strict rules regarding essays here at the university. so please be sureto tap in to those resources, should you need them. this is my team, there are four academicadvisers as well as [?] in the middle, so the first angela and laurie, that's me. [?] isthe exchange coordinator and then we do have

another laurie, laurie johnson. two laurie's,and we are both blond so if you come in to the office and say "well i met laurie theother day" which laurie? "i don't know, but she was blonde" we have a problem. i tendto call myself, i am the older laurie, and i'm the old lady hill or older hill, but ifyou need to come and meet us please do. we are all very dedicated to help you. barb atthe end, she just celebrated her 4th year at mcmaster, she's a wealth of knowledge anda very caring person as we all are. how's everybody feeling? good? school just finished, yeah. but how are you feeling about coming in september? does this help? are we happy?are we excited? are we terrified? still? anxious? what we're going to do next is i would likethe parents to come down and they're going

to go with my boss greg rombough, who i wouldlike to introduce you to. he's the manager of our student experience academic undergraduateoffice. he's going to take the parents in to a little room just to have a little chatfor five minutes, the students can stay here. we're almost ready to wrap up but if you'dlike to go with greg, please feel free to go with him.
